THE QUESTION

Picture
What are we Educating our Children for?

"WATCH LUCY'S VIDEO IT'S INSPIRING"  Jon
https://art31.co.uk/videos/art31-young-people-igniting-change-in-the-arts/
KEY QUOTES:  EDUCATION
  • "Not everyone likes reading for reading sake they need purpose"
  • "I don't know what standards are"?
  • "Setting standards in comparison to everyone else  lowers self esteem in those who feel they are losers"
  • "Encourage discovery"
  • "The education system was designed for the needs of the industrial revolution and is now not fit for purpose"
  • "The most important things to get from an education is to find your element in life and through that develop curiosity, creativity, empathy, to work with purpose, these things will inspire you to learn the skills necessary to achieve your goals. Education"
  • "Education should be an individual pursuit, not a cloning exercise to satisfy measurable political statistics".
  • "The problem  for the school system is that with individual  development is not measurable, a teacher would have to write is his or her report "Jon Oram is a bad example of himself"
  • How do you identify a "standard?
  • It's about passing exams no room for individual creativity. Can't teach anything unless it's measurable.
  • We're putting children under huge pressures, overloading them and there are increasing mental health issues. At the same time we're not equipping children to be resilient.
  • Schools are fortresses, not open to the whole community.
  • Should schools/ classes just be for children or include others from the community rather than segregation by age?.
  • Projects enable children to learn multiple skills with a purpose and end product.
  • There is no room for failure so little incentive to take risks.
  • All in all we're just another brick in the wall"
LUCY EDKIN ART 31 EDUCATION
Here is the link to the ART31 website for anyone who might be interested in having a look: art31.co.uk
I had the lovely opportunity to be on the ART31 youth board for three which consisted of young people aged 13-25 from all across Kent who wanted to create change and more opportunities for young people in Kent.
We made a short documentary back in 2017 (I didn't think it was that long ago!) Talking about who ART31 are, what we did and there is a bit towards the end about the one day 'Uprising' festival that we organised for young people, Artists and decision makers to all get together and ignite change in the arts and education.

Here is the mini documentary: https://art31.co.uk/videos/art31-young-people-igniting-change-in-the-arts/
Sadly as of last year, I'm no longer a member of the youth board as I'm now over the age of 25 but if anyone would like me to talk with them about it or forward on any more information about the ART31 movement then they are welcome to get in touch!

Disclaimer  It is important to recognise the Empty Gallery Cafe is a 'conversation' space where different people air their views and points of view, and that they should feel free to do so. The value of these conversations are that they allow us to hear all points of view and gain a greater understanding of the complexities of what people think and feel about any given subject. Any statements presented by an individual as factual cannot  necessarily be verified and should be taken at face value, nor can we guarantee the accuracy of the reports as they are written by volunteers elected at each conversation.  The opinions expressed in the reports on the conversations belong solely to the individual who expressed them, and not necessarily to the organisation, committee, group or any of the other individuals in attendance.
